The issue may have arisen because we have changed domains.
Assuming that you had correctly activated the license on that domain, and the update failed as you say, do you have a Windows based server? If you DO have a Windows server (unlikely, as most use Apache), you will need this plugin installed to overcome a bug with that server software:

Otherwise, if your current version is 2.3.2 or later, then the advice in this thread should work for you:

I had to deactivate, delete and install the latest version to get this to work as you mentioned. I also had to reset my permalink settings or else the search results would be empty.
I’m not sure what is causing the update problems, but it looks like this process was able to get the latest version up and running.
