    Ref sort order

    Never mind – ignore this. Found a typo which explained why I couldn’t get the posts to sort randomly. Only missed seeing it a hundred times…

    Yes, thanks.

    Have to be honest and say it’s beyond my skill level – which in the case of javascript is zero! Maybe I’ll be able to get someone to have a look at it in the future, but for now the basic filter works, which is enough to be getting on with.

    Thanks for that anyway!

    That was the answer!
    Thank you

    Well, they have assigned the ticket to a senior support guy who is looking into it, but the thought had crossed my mind. I’m just concerned that it will affect speed, not just for this but other sites. With the existing setup, paired with wp rocket, it seems to work quite well… except for the damned redirects. No idea why it should be so difficult to do something so simple.

    What’s driving me nuts is that although the site and search form are working, I am unable to create redirects between old and new urls, never mind between domains…

    Ah well, took a couple of days, but now all working again. What a pain in the butt.
    I suspect half the problem is not so much nginx but support people who aren’t entirely familiar with it, and also the problems coming from tickets being dealt with by different people on different days. All the problems seem to come from how nginx deals with redirects.

    Futurehosting.com – I have a VPS and they added nginx on request as a reverse proxy.

    Yesterday I asked them to undo everything they had done with the nginx setup and they said they had done as requested, but today the form is still as dead as can be. I’m seriously thinking about removing the filter bar because it causes endless problems – I’m sure it’s a setup problem on the server rather than the plugin, but as it stands it is totally non-functional and is killing the site.

    The problem is that whatever issues the hosting co have getting the setup right (and to be fair they are generally excellent and the server is quick and has never had an outage in over a year) the problems prevent me from having both a working S&F form (on up to 150 taxonomy pages and 3 CPT archives) and redirects (both on the home site and also older html sites that need to be redirected to the home site) at the same time. It seems to be one or the other, not both.

    Okay, now it’s working.
    I asked my host company to tell me if they could trace the cause and they just replied saying they had ‘adjusted a few things’ and now it works. But I’m buggered if I know why.

    I generally use firefox for testing and browsing in general, and that hadn’t shown any errors, but today I looked at console on chrome and it spat out these 2 lines:

    GET http://www.britishcatteries.co.uk/cattery/ 403 (Forbidden)
    Navigated to http://www.britishcatteries.co.uk/cattery/

    The page opens correctly, even if strangely slow. So I’m not sure what is forbidden…
    It doesn’t appear to exist for the vet cpt page.

    I’ve not seen it before and it’s obviously not a normal 403 otherwise the page wouldn’t open. What would cause it, do you know?

    My currently bog-standard htaccess contains only this:

    AddHandler php5-fastcgi .php
    Action php5-fastcgi /cgi-bin/php5.fcgi

    # BEGIN WordPress
    <IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /cats/
    RewriteRule ^index\.php$ – [L]
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
    RewriteRule . /cats/index.php [L]
    </IfModule>
