Some posts are set to private mainly because they contain private details (such as logins), or are simply asking for such, and particularly, will contain information not relevant or useful to other users. If a post contains information useful to users in general, it will be public.
I do agree with Daniel that the current system of marking answers as “private” is quite annoying. It makes those support forums almost pointless.
The whole idea of a support forum is for every member to see the answers provided in a problem similar to theirs, or to make their own helping contribution. As soon as an answer is marked as “private” in a discussion, it detracts other forum members from following that discussion.
I have never seen anything like this on other forums.
If sensitive information has to be provided, it should be provided in a Private Message.
