Hi Trevor;
Everyone in the area is pretty caught up in the most recent mass shooting in the states, this one in the Squirrel Hill section of Pittsburgh. We’re not far from there, and it’s the part of Pittsburgh I know best. I did some non-productive poking-around, but didn’t get very far. I contacted the developer of the Woo Discount Rules (WDR) plugin for assistance. I haven’t heard back yet.
I can’t even find where to add excluded categories in WDR. In case this isn’t going to work with WDR, are you aware of another plugin that will use native as well as custom taxonomies? I don’t turn up anything in searches, but I’m not entirely certain what search terms would be productive either.
Peace,
Dave
Anonymous(Private) October 31, 2018 at 12:29 pm #192335I just heard back from the developer of WDR who asked me something that reminded me what the issue was. Their plug-in doesn’t handle custom taxonomies. They have no direct means of category exclusion. To exclude 1 category, I have to include all the others. That would be easy enough if there was a way to put everything else into the uncategorized category. I kind of don’t understand why WooCommerce doesn’t do that automatically. If I try to set up a new product page, it won’t allow me to publish until a category is chosen. I just can’t see spending the time involved to drill down into each product page to place them into the uncategorized category. I have right around 1,000 product pages. I think it’s time to find another solution altogether. My employees will be here momentarily. I think the first order of business today will be to find another strategy for discounting, or to find another plug-in that will handle custom taxonomies, or at least have the ability to exclude one. If you know of anything, that’d help, but I’ll keep you in the loop until this is resolved.
Anonymous(Private) November 1, 2018 at 12:51 pm #192475Hi, Trevor;
It’s not going to work with that plugin. I need to find something else. The problem, according to that developer, is that the majority of my products aren’t in categories at all. He said that WooCommerce requires categories. When I create a new product page, that’s been my experience also.
I don’t know how to assign all those unassigned products to categories except manually, one at a time, and that makes me crazy to consider how big a pain it is to do that for even just one. It appears, though, that until this has been resolved so that every product is assigned a category, there’s a strong possibility that I’m going to run into this situation again and again.
I know that the data on the website can be downloaded as a text file, manipulated in a database or spreadsheet, and uploaded again. Is this a possibility to resolve this situation?
Peace,
Dave
Anonymous(Private) November 5, 2018 at 6:46 pm #192818No such luck. I’d need the categories to filter the product. I don’t have to drill down as far as I thought I would, though. I can do it in the quick edit window.
I wanted to thank you again for your help in this and to let you know that if I haven’t already figured out how to do it, this topic can be closed.
