Hi,

I believe the following should be possible but I am unable to find out how to do this. The requirement is that a user should be able to select a category drop down limited to car makes. Another drop down box should also be available and the selection options here should update based on the first list.

An example would be box one is car make i.e. Audi and box 2 would then display A1,A3,A4 etc

I am trying to reproduce what you can see here: http://caradvice.com.au under their car search menu

Great, are you able to confirm how this will work. I am using categories and sub-categories, will the new functionality work with the category taxonomy?

Hi Graham

You can only have 1 field for tags, or one field for categories or 1 field for a specific taxonomy.

However, you can create additional fields using custom taxonomies easily to achieve something similar to what you want.

I’m considering adding in something like you mention with sub categories as different fields etc in the near future.

Ah, its the sub category stuff that I really need. I thought from your earlier post on the 20th that was part of this release so I could have chained categories which is what I have purchased the plugin for 🙁

Hi Graham – I’m afraid not, what I mention above is that it is something similar – ie, to use taxonomies to create additional fields, and they are essentially chained, because once you make a selection in 1 field, the other fields filter down and only show related options – which I then go on to explain above:

The feature you mention has not made it on the roadmap yet – and I don’t think I’ve mentioned anywhere that this is happening.

If you take a look at your own example:

This will be possible with the current version, you just need to create a custom taxonomy for Makes, and a custom taxonomy for Models – but Models are not a sub category of Makes – they are another taxonomy of all models.

Once you select a make, the models list will filter down to show only available options. Conversely, which you can’t do on the demo you sent is, you could select a model from the dropdown list, and then the makes would filter down to the one associated with that particular model.

It works very similar to how you describe but not exactly the same.

Thank you for this. Would it be possible to share a screenshot of exactly how this would be set up in the plugin (assuming the taxonomies have been created) as I am struggling to get this working.

Sorry for the confusion, after reading back – what I meant to say was, that this is all possible in 2.0.

So if you have your taxonomies set up, and added to your form – then you are good to go – just waiting on the 2.0 release to do the magic between the fields which autohides unavailable options as you make selections.
