Once, I think. Is it OK to close this thread for now?

Yes, you are correct. Thank you for that. The reason for the two post types is most of the assets we need to search and filter are PDFs with a few non-PDF assets. In the past with a similar scenario we have used one custom post type and for any asset that is a PDF we would create a “dummy” post which would appear in the search results and then direct that post to the PDF using a plugin called “Page Links to”. I wanted to get away with this extra step of creating these “dummy” posts so we are trying to filter both the PDFs directly from the media library and the custom post type. With your experience, could you recommend a better solution?

In my current set up, if I turn off one set of rules, it seems to work OK as the assets will definitely be associated with one of the taxonomies. But I want this to be as future proof as possible so if using taxonomies with two post types is going to be an issue, I want to use a different solution.
Thank you for all your time and help.

I think I would have a custom post type, and the posts in that have a custom field (I would use ACF free) which is the link to the file. Searching media files directly is always problematic in WordPress, and much easier to do this way.
