    Hi guys,

I didn’t find a topic based on what I’m about to ask, but if I’ve overlooked this topic, please post the URL and we can close this one.

Let’s say you have an online study section that has 4 separate areas of study, and within each area of study you have content that is specific to that area of study.

Is there a way to add a search field that will do a keyword search ONLY within a specific area of study? To only return results based on the content available within a single, specific area of study?

    If that makes sense 🙂

So, the search form would have just the text search field, and maybe a submit button, but nothing else? It would be on a page for just that area of study?

    It would presumably have…

    Search Box
    Filter by Writer
    Filter by Topic
    Submit
    Reset

Each of the 4 areas of study would have a similar box. The idea is that the user filters based only on content specific to that area of study.

If we added a Search Box, we’d want the user to get content related only to that area of study, and not get results that are being pulled site-wide.

Personally, I’d rather just keep the filters and not use a search in this instance, but my boss seems to really want a search box capability if it’s easily doable.

Would having a different search form (looking the same but in fact with different settings) on each page be possible? Is the area of study a taxonomy in its own right?

If I understand, yes to both? In fact, once we nail down the topics within each study, the plan was to filter only on those topics within an area of study and exclude topics from other areas of study.

Then you could set the study area in the form settings tabs, the Categories, Tags and Taxonomies tab, include only the area you want.

I think I’m starting to see the light.

    1. Which is the Form settings tab? I see General, Display Results, Posts, T/C/Tax, Post Meta, and Advanced.

    2. In the T/Cat/Tax tab, I would click the magnifying glass and select specific categories from within the pop-up, yeah?

I meant of the tabs, choose the T/C/Tax tab. And yes, click the mag glass and pick one as an include.

    Perfect.

Hey, semi-related question: Where/how do I add a message when a search doesn’t return any results? “No results, try again” sort of thing…

It is dependent on which Display results method you use.
