Thanks for the help, I was able to use that plugin CPTUI for hierarchical filters, so that is working now without problems and shows the results as a vertical list.
But the original problem about showing search results in some kind of album/portfolio remains. Any thoughts? is it necessary to use the archive method for this? I tried using the archive method with a custom template, but I only get a blank page.

I have read a lot on the support forum and in the FAQ it is mentioned that lightbox can be used to show results. How can I accomplish that?

Maybe the short question is, can I show a portfolio with a shortcode on a page, and then filter items only from that specific portfolio by using search&filter?

If you are using our Shortcode method, that then uses a template file called results.php. In turn, the documentation here tells you how you can make a local copy of that template so that you can safely edit it. I have shown others how to edit that file so that the results look and feel like a gallery/grid/portfolio from their theme.
