Pre-populate search text field

How can I populate the search text field with a the string value from a WP default search, i.e. get_search_query() ?

You can do this, but only by editing your theme core files, I think. I have seen a similar request before that Ross has answered (but I cannot recall where). The last person that asked, the user and I figured that the search was a simple theme included search template file and we replaced that with a file named the same that simply called a search and filter form that had only the search field in.

We then styled it to match the theme’s own search field.
