My guess is that somewhere in your site there is a call to pre_get_posts() that is limiting the results, and causing that error. Have a quick read of this thread (you will pick up a familiar feeling I suspect):

Get back to me to pick this up. It is late here where I am, so it may be tomorrow before I reply.

    Hi again,

thanks for your speedy response. The problem actually seems to be different than I first described it. It appears that the plugin is adding more than 120 with a different issue happening.

Here is the mystery: The search results don’t show all the published archive (our CPT) post. Yet, when I go in the dashboard and hit ‘Update’ (without changing any content in post) then that post magically appears. So I can go through our 440 archive post types and bulk re-publish them – but what would be causing this? Any thoughts.

It seems to effect posts at random.

Is it possible to see the search page working on a live web page (link or URL)?

I think I need to see the search and filter form setup, and for that I need to be an admin.

Sorry for delay – I have now made you an admin.

    Hi

How were these posts added to WP? Were they imported through a plugin, or entered manually?

Your server seems incredibly slow. I have clicked ‘rebuild cache’ and it took ages to start. And even longer to try to start build.

Right now the site seems unreachable. Not a surprise as I can see the host is Bluehost, part of EIG:

    http://www.linux-depot.com/non-endurance-international-group-eig-hosting/

Just two of MANY similar articles. Why do WordPress.com recommend them? Goodness knows. Another to avoid is GoDaddy.

Oh, and you need to upgrade to v2.2.0

I have upgraded to v2.2.0 now.

I’m aware of the shortcomings of Bluehost (and GoDaddy!) we don’t use them ourselves but this was the clients hosting choice. I’ve occasionally experienced the site being down (and the occasional 500 server error due to this) but the site should be working currently.

Updating the plugin made a change… but not in the positive. Now it only shows 32 archive in the search results. The (numbers) next to the Filters seem to be correct though, and once again I am able to ‘Re-Publish’ the post types and they show in the search results.

    I asked this also:
