It seems that the search is only working on the general content. Is there a way to get it to search through custom fields of a custom post type?

Hey Rena

Yeah the Search Field itself behaves like the default WP search field, searching in title, post content and excerpt by default.

You can enhance this by adding the Relevanssi plugin:
