    I should add I am not actually translating any of the content that is in the widget or that is returned from the search… in both cases the search form widget is going to be returning English results.

    I resolved this when I read that the Display Widgets plugin had been deprecated after WordPress 4.7 by its designer, and has been replaced with a much-improved version called Display Widgets SEO Plus. This took care of my problem. You can mark this as resolved, thanks.
