Form to filter search results from other s&f form

Hi!
I have a search form only with an input objet and submit button on the site nav bar, and i want to place another filter form on the results page in order to filter the search results.
How and where should i pass the custom search query from the first form to the second one?

Is the search in the nav bar a theme (type) search? If it is, (parts of) this post may help:
