    the “results per page” box seems to not affect anything.

    Sorry, busy weekend. Took longer than I expected to upgrade my server to EasyApache 4 and PHP7 🙁

    Sooo fast now. Like massively faster 🙂

    So, this is probably a filter in a plugin, theme, or likely some custom code that affects the query and sets it to 100. Usually a filter that uses pre_get_posts, so you will need to recursively search your site for that function and take a look at the code around it to see if arguments are being passed to that effect (100 per page).
