I would like to have a page that shows some initial default results, or even just a div (which i can do a custom query on), but when you do a search this initial list disappears and you get the form results displayed.
Is there a way to do this at present?I tried checking for $post existing in php, but with the ajax search, the $post seems to be there right from go.

By default S&F will show results unfiltered in the box, are you saying you would like to replace this with a completely custom set of results, and once the user starts to interact then show S&F results?
Thanks

Yes, I need to show a ‘featured’ list initially, then when a search is done, show the results as usual. If that can’t be done, is there a way to show some other default php/html (i can just have a custom query), that disappears when a search is done.
thanks

Why not have a custom page with your featured list, then have a search form on the sidebar, then when you submit the search form it takes you to the search results page?
Are you using ajax with shortcode? There is an update almost about to go live which allows you to do this (it was not possible with previous versions)
Thanks
