Ok thank you, and is it possible to limit the date range to years without the choice of month or day?

No. Instead, what you would do is create a custom field in the posts that is only the year. You can create custom code to hook in to the WordPress save_post() function that automatically takes the date and calculates the year and puts that into the field, if you were handy at coding.
