Is there anyway to create a custom input type. So, for example, it shows ONLY the top-level categories, but lets the user expand/open the tree to show subcategories. Something like

A hierarchy checkbox/radio button option is way too long if there is a significant amount of child categories, and the combo box does the same thing, but in a dropdown.
I could even a flyout for children — much like the WordPress admin menu itself. Just something to help only show the top level parents, but have access to the entire hierarchy.
This would be hugely helpful as the current options are way too limiting, but I love everything else about S&F.
