    I have a searchform with several checkbox-areas. By default, each area shows up in a new line, so there is a lot of scrolling in the page. How can I bring several areas in one line to make a shorter site?

    You would need custom css. As the needs of each user and site vary so much, it is very hard to cost effectively bring this into the plugin. If you show me a live page, and also provide a screenshot (link to it in the post) of the desired appearance, then I can help. BUT, be very aware of how responsive (or not) it might end up being.
