calling jQuery function before form submit

Hi there,
wanted to ask what is the best way to “catch” the form submit event and call functions before and after user click on the submit button.

In my case:

1. i want to scroll the screen down to the result area after user clicks on the submit button

2. i want to copy value from one field and pate it to another field when user click on the sub,it button , before the form is being submitted

You might be able to use custom javascript to do this, but you would need to take the advice of a paid third party coder as to how to do this.
