You see I have added two new taxonomies to Posts using the Custom Post Type UI plugin:

Then moved the terms using the Taxonomy Switcher plugin (this plugin can be removed once you are done):

Then added Technique to the form:

Then saved the form, then clicked Update Cache.

    Thanks!

My concern is that tag pages have moved, and I have 4 things that concern me about that:
    – if someone has bookmarked it, it wouldn’t work
    – SEO will be impacted
    – links in my weekly newsletter could be broken
    – if I continued with this, I’d also need to change links in my menu

    Here’s an example https://staging.knotions.com/technique/cables/

I really don’t want to make any changes to the URLs. Is there a way to do it without this? While I do understand that this approach is better, the site has been live for several years, gets tons of visits and I don’t want links to change.

Again, I greatly appreciate you doing this, but I just don’t see how to make it work for an already-active site. Is there another way?

There is no way around this. Yes, the structure has been ‘wrong’ all this time, but you CAN use a re-direct plugin so that anyone who use the old link will get re-directed. Yes, the menu links will need to be ‘fixed’.

With re-directs in place, you should not take any SEO hit. Also, if you have a Google Webmaster account and submit the new sitemap Google will pick it up.

If you have links in articles, you can use a URL changing plugin to quickly run through the database to fix any old links.

I’m honestly not sure that I’ll do all of this at this point. There are A LOT of tags and links, and I’m sure to miss some.

While I DEFINITELY appreciate your help with this, I might consider a different plugin where this won’t be an issue. All these changes at this point seem ripe for error.

Do you want me to undo what I did? The terms need switching back to tags is all, and CPT UI needs to be removed.

    Thanks, but not necessary 🙂

I actually want to study what you did because I might use it for things moving forward. And since this is only staging, there’s no harm in it being there now.
