It seems the search does not like spaces in the Post Meta values. I’m using a custom field plugin and when you add a field select with multiple options, if you don’t specifically enter a value, it creates one based off the label. When I add my values in Search Filter Pro, using the Auto-Suggest, it grabs the values with spaces fine – but when I search on the front-end it does not return any results.

Is there a way to have Search Filter Pro match a value with spaces in it? The funny thing is, if I edit the query in the URL after searching, and manually add a space in the URL, the results show up.

Example, manually adding a space between “KootenayRockies” makes it display results…

    Search (no results):
    /search/?_sfm_region=KootenayRockies&sf_ajax_timestamp=1401719498218

    Manually Edited (returns results):
    /search/?_sfm_region=Kootenay Rockies&sf_ajax_timestamp=1401719498218

    Hey ibnoman

    I’ll take a look at this tomorrow…

    Regarding the post types…

I’m thinking this must be another plugin which modifies the query, or some custom code using pre_get_posts?

Can you try on another theme just to test the plugin so I can get an idea of where the problem is?

Do you have any custom code in functions.php that might affect the display of the results?

    Thanks

Following another test I’m seeing the following:

    1. Still seeing this – When on a sub-category page, the sub-category is not pre-selected in the form. The free version pre-selected all the category and tag pages.
    2. Only seeing this if on sub-cat page and all tags and categories are selected – When on a sub-category page, the search results seem to be displayed using the latest posts template???
    3. Because results are shown on latest posts page, this was caused by conditional tags on the widget, so more of a side effect of point 2When on a sub-category page, searching without a search term causes the form to disappear from the sidebar.

    Hi Wayne

Yeah this version works a bit differently due to a lot of extra features, so some of the structure had to change but all in all it works better once you’ve got it set up right.

I’ve had to explain to a few people how to set this up properly so am hoping to get a tutorial set up in the next couple of days. Anyway here goes:

    1) Are you using a custom template? Or is this box unticked? If it is unticked, the behaviour should be much the same as the free version although there was a bug in the last version (1.1.3) so please update. This bug affected some things with setting defaults so I’m hoping thats all it is!

    2) For Ajax you really should use a custom template, so make sure this box is ticked, then make sure the correct template is being used for your search results (the filename box), by default it is search.php. If you do not like the way your result are being displayed try different template filenames (found in your theme folder) – some common ones are archive.php and index.php

Test all the above without Ajax enabled, and see if you are happy with the way it is working.

    3. This sounds like a template issue, so please revert to point (2).

Let me know when you have tried all the above 🙂

I’ve been using the free version for a few days which works fine. I upgraded today because I wanted to remove the submit button and upgrade to auto change results with ajax.

Unfortunately after trying many combinations of setup I could not get ajax mode to work at all.

The pro version works for me without ajax, although there are a few issues I noticed so far:

    1. When on a sub-category page, the sub-category is not pre-selected in the form. The free version pre-selected all the category and tag pages.
    2. When on a sub-category page, the search results seem to be displayed using the latest posts template???
    3. When on a sub-category page, searching without a search term causes the form to disappear from the sidebar.

The display count for a parent totals all counts for itself and any child. This is misleading to the viewer.

Example: Parent category has no items; child category A has 4 items; child category B has 3 items. Parent category shows (7) items. This is misleading because the viewer thinks they will see 7 results if they select the parent category. Instead they get ‘no results found’ and wonder why the system said there were (7).

Either the count should display actual-items-only in the parent (not the sum of children) or the system should return all items matching the total count shown for the parent.

Thanks for your consideration. It is great to see a professional plugin in this filter space since the others either are un-supported or difficult to use.

There is no Sidebar Manager in place. When I assign the navigation to the theme’s primary navigation location, it still disappears when Search Results are shown.

Is the Search & Filter plugin set to hide/disable the loading of certain elements when results are shown?

    Thanks!

Hey Ross – Thanks for the speedy response!

I’ve replaced the template with archive.php (search results didn’t show) and index.php (which showed results, but the top nav still disappears).

The source code shows that the nav elements are not loading. No nav list items appear in the code in the search results page…

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks!

    Hey Neal

I think this is happening because the plugin is loading a template you do not intend for it to use..

Make sure you have the tick box in your settings that says “use custom template” ticked, and the filename search.php

If the results still don’t look as you want, try changing the template name to archive.php or index.php and see if those templates are more suitable?

Search results do not go to a specific page, but you can set the slug in the settings panel, such as search-results and then the search results will be at their own specific URL like:

    yoursite.com/search-results

    🙂

Let me know if the above works for you!

Hi! This plugin is great! Just bought the Pro Version!

I am having an issue with my site navigation (top right) disappearing when the Search Results load.

Example – Try searching for 3 bedrooms here:

    http://realtor.fluidnrg.com/

It appears as if the results load within the same page with many elements hidden, but I need to “unhide” my top navigation which is contained in a widgeted area called Header Right.

It would also be great to direct the search results to a designated page. Is this possible, or will they always load within the same page using the designated template?

    Thanks!
