I am using the shortcode method and just testing out the pro version initially. Regardless, of the theme I use, the results show up under the search window using Ajax search. Is this normal and needs to be addressed via custom code, or user error?

Ah, I see. I assume that you have pasted the two shortcodes into the page. They need a little HTML around them to split the page in a sidebar and main column, so if your theme has a page that does that, use the HTML on that page to guide you as to what to add.
Many themes now give you a visual page editor where you can specify the page layout with areas where you can put widgets and shortcodes.
