I’m trying to create a comprehensive awards site and I want to filter those awards by at least seven categories. Things like “entrant type,” “medium type,” “content type,” “subject type,” etc.
I’d like to use the category tagging for “entrant type,” “medium type,” “content type,” and “subject type.” But it seems like whatever options I put in for “entrant type,” will also show for “medium type.” Is there a way to prevent that?

I think you need to create custom taxonomies for each field, rather than using categories for each field – please see the restrictions here:
And also further down the page on how to create custom taxonomies – they’re easy to create and behave just the same as Tags & Categories.
Thanks
Anonymous(Private) March 22, 2016 at 5:01 am #40093Actually I think what I need is the Advanced Custom Fields. I downloaded the plug-in and customized my posts with the fields I need. But the fields I added aren’t appearing in Search and Filter’s “available fields” when I build a new form. And I’m confused because you say that the plugin allows users to search custom fields/meta data.

Fields created with Advanced custom fields are simply “Post Meta” fields – so you must add a “post meta” field, and then choose the correct key.
Depending on your data, you could use either custom fields or taxonomies 🙂
Thanks
