Possibility to modify the search directly?

There is no built in way, but with some customisation your should be able to achieve what you need.

Check the Ajax events here (first question):

So, you would need to detect ajax finishing loading, and then you would need some JS to add focus to the search box again – so something like (untested):

//detects when the ajax request has finished and the content has been updated
// - add scripts that apply to your results here
$(document).on("sf:ajaxfinish", ".searchandfilter", function(){
	//focus the search box
	$('.searchandfilter input[type="text"]').focus();
});
