In answer to your questions:
2a. and 2b. Some themes need one, or both, of these set so that they load the correct template. You would use these ONLY if we (tech support) advise that it is necessary. Using them otherwise probably will not cause an issue though.
2c. This is something we plan to add to our support for Relevanssi sometime in the V3 release cycle, but a V3.0, so is some time away yet. At the moment it is not possible.
