We have a site with 13K articles and so have an external search engine configured using elastic. We have set our search.php to make a REST call to elastic and then we display results. We then use the SF taxonomy filtering to allow the user to refine searches.

However the integration isn’t quite working, as it calls the native WordPress search AND the REST call (so it’s super slow). Also, Ajax functionality doesn’t quite work.

    1. Is there a recommended way of integrating SF so that we make a call to elastic?
    2. If so, is there a way to make this work such that the Ajax part works?

    Many thanks!

Support for Elasticsearch is not an advertised feature of our plugin. At this time, it is not well supported by hosting companies, and where it is supported the setup is not at all easy.

I tried to install it on my own server with Cloudways and failed, and I am reasonably competent with installing my own custom server stack as well. Now that I use a host to do such things, and Cloudways are quite good at support, they admitted it was hard to setup and needs a lot more work before it is usable.

IF it becomes well supported (which would require hosting companies figuring out how to make it a quick one click install for their server stacks), then it might gain traction with WordPress site developers. At this time, the ElasticPress plugin has only just over 2000 active installs, most of which are development installs.

Thanks a lot for the reply, understand about not supporting elastic at this time.

Since we have an instance working with elastic and SF for the filtering part, the main issue we’d like to progress is turning off the native search, as we already call out to elastic from search.php.

I appreciate this is an odd question – but is there a way to deactivate the native search in SF?

    Thanks.
